Meet Your Trainer: The Journey Behind The Happy Hound Gang and My Force-Free Approach

Introduction: A Passion for Helping Dogs and Owners Thrive

Hi, I’m Laura, the founder of The Happy Hound Gang! Like many dog trainers, my journey started with my own dog, but it has grown into something so much more. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of dogs and their owners across Anglesey, Gwynedd, and North Wales, helping them build better relationships and enjoy happier lives together.

Here’s a bit about how I got started, why I believe in force-free training, and what makes The Happy Hound Gang unique.

1. How It All Began: From Dog Owner to Dog Trainer

My journey into dog training began in 2016 when we adopted Oscar, a wonderful dog who taught me so much about patience and communication. Not long after, I moved to North Wales and attended my first dog training class—but it wasn’t the experience I’d hoped for.

  • The Turning Point: That initial class didn’t align with my values or expectations, but it led me to another trainer who used compassionate, force-free methods. I loved the supportive atmosphere and became her assistant, learning as much as I could about this kinder approach to training.
  • The Transition to Training: When she moved away, I took over her role and continued my journey, completing professional training certifications and starting my own business.

I haven’t looked back since! Helping owners and their dogs build trust and understanding has become my passion.

2. Why I Believe in Force-Free, Kindness-Based Training

At The Happy Hound Gang, we use only force-free training methods that prioritise kindness, patience, and positive reinforcement. Here’s why:

  • It Builds Trust: Dogs learn best when they feel safe and understood. Force-free methods strengthen the bond between you and your dog rather than creating fear or anxiety.
  • It’s Effective: Positive reinforcement isn’t just compassionate—it’s scientifically proven to produce reliable, long-lasting results.
  • It’s Enjoyable: Training should be fun for both you and your dog. My goal is to create sessions that feel rewarding and engaging for everyone involved.

3. My Training Philosophy: Building Better Relationships

For me, training is about more than just teaching commands. It’s about building a relationship with your dog that’s rooted in trust, understanding, and joy.

  • The Big Picture: Dogs are only with us for a short time, and my mission is to help you make the most of those years by creating a strong, harmonious bond.
  • Real-World Training: I focus on skills that matter in daily life, from recall to reactivity management, ensuring your dog is prepared for the challenges of the real world.

“Laura has such a calm, supportive way of working with dogs. My reactive dog felt at ease with her straight away, and I learned so much about how to better communicate with my pup.”

4. The Happy Hound Gang Today: A Community for Dog Lovers

What started as a small business has grown into a vibrant community of dog lovers across Anglesey, Gwynedd, and North Wales. Whether through one-to-one training, puppy classes, or our fun hoopers workshops, I love seeing owners and dogs thrive together.

  • Dog Sports and Beyond: I’m a big fan of dog sports like canicross, flyball, and hoopers, which are fantastic ways to keep dogs mentally and physically engaged. I incorporate elements of these sports into training when appropriate, making sessions even more exciting for active dogs.
  • Inclusive Training for All: I’m proud to provide an inclusive space for neurodivergent clients and those with unique needs. Open communication ensures that every client feels supported and comfortable during training.

5. Ongoing Learning: Staying at the Forefront of Dog Training

Dog training is a constantly evolving field, and I’m committed to staying updated on the latest techniques and research. As a registered member of the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT), I continually invest in professional development to bring you the best in force-free, science-backed training.
